by Trinity and DeShanna Neal; illustrated by Art Twink
My Rainbow is a touching and authentic story which centers a young Black transgender girl named Trinity, who wishes to have longer hair. She expresses to her mother that having longer hair would feel affirming to her, but the feeling of hair on her neck is itchy and causes sensory discomfort. Trinity's family is supportive and creative; her mom and older sibling work together to create a beautiful rainbow wig for Trinity that is soft and curly and comfortable. The family encourages Trinity that all aspects of her identity deserve to be honored and celebrated. Co-authored by DeShanna Neal and her daughter Trinity, and with warmly colored illustrations by Art Twink, My Rainbow addresses multiple topics like race, trans identities, and autism, in ways that are thoughtful, respectful, joyful, and nuanced.
