Perfect for book groups, this fascinating novel takes on issues surrounding diversity in the workplace, and does so in a very savvy and surprising manner. Twenty-six year old Nella Rogers has for several years been the only Black girl at Wagner Books, an elite publishing house similar to Knopf. Naturally, she’s happy to welcome another young black woman to the office. Slowly, and then convincingly after a public humiliation, Nella realizes she has reason to be afraid of her coworker. As in recent novels Leave the World Behind and Station Eleven, something alarming and not quite believable is confronting our very likable protagonist.
