There just aren't many fantasy books with Black kids in them, so I was so psyched to stumble upon the wonderful Nightmare-Verse series. It's an urban fantasy retelling of Alice in Wonderland with some serious Buffy the Vampire Slayer vibes thrown in.. Set in Atlanta, Alice is grieving the loss of her father when she is thrust into the chaotic and fantastical world of destroying nightmares. She's just a normal teen who sometimes steps through a secret portal to Wonderland to save the world. I binged the first two books in a weekend and am eagerly awaiting the third in the series. There was talk about the series being adapted into a TV show and I really, really hope that happens.
