This spring title, a selection of Reese’s Book Club, was soaring in popularity with many holds when the coronavirus hit. I was lucky enough to score a copy of the audiobook through Libby/Overdrive. It is a fascinating novel with many questions for readers to ponder about race and racism. The book explores the relationship between a privileged white mother and her black babysitter. Emira is accused by a security guard at an upscale grocery store of having kidnapped her little charge, Briar. The author greatly ups the tension when Emira begins dating a white man who filmed the incident at the grocery store. The audio is delightful; the audio reader’s voices for Emira and Briar are especially satisfying.
