Restless Reads Don Quixote - ONLINE

Thursday, October 8, 2020

8:00 PM - 9:30 PM

Join us this fall for a thorough exploration of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes!

The Restless Reads Virtual Classics Book Club is a collaboration of the Jones Library, the New York Public Library, and Restless Reads, the virtual book club of Restless Books. We’ll be in good company on our journey to La Mancha: our guide will be Ilan Stavans, a noted Cervantes scholar and devotee (and publisher at Restless Books). We’ll tackle this bucket list book a little at a time over the next few months, with monthly virtual meetings hosted by Stavans along the way, wrapping up by early December. During an uncertain fall, the restless, struggling, dreaming figure of Don Quixote will be a good friend.

Follow this link for more information about the book, the author, and to register for the book discussion.  Registration is being handled by the New York Public Library, so don't be surprised!  Information about how to connect with the discussion via Google Meet will be sent to you after registration, the day before the event.  You must register for each meeting separately.

For the September 10th meeting, we will be discussing Part 1, chapters 1 - 35.
For the October 8th meeting, we will be discussing Part 1, chapters 36 - 52.
For the November 12th meeting, we will be discussing Part 2, chapters 1 - 36.
For the December 10th meeting, we will be discussing Part 2, chapters 37 - 74.

Feel free to read any translation you prefer.  Ilan Stavans recommends an Ormsby translation for more traditional language, and the Grossman translation for a more contemporary version.

“This is a book for all seasons. It feels to me as if it has always been needed as a way to mend the world, perhaps today more than ever, modernity being both a blessing and a curse, as our sense of self undergoes heavy pressure to conform, to lose its uniqueness.” ~ Ilan Stavans
