Burnett Gallery Virtual Exhibit

AR[T]HS — Amherst Regional High School Student Artwork
July 1 – 31, 2021

This selection of work by art students at Amherst Regional High School, curated by the Burnett Gallery Committee at The Jones Library, includes work from all the Art Department’s offerings this past year. The Art Department decided last spring to design and teach an entirely new set of classes for 20-21, tailored for remote/hybrid learning. This decision was a practical one, as so many of the standard courses used materials that could not be used from home. This was both a challenge and an opportunity. We found that many students experiencing isolation found some joy exploring their creative selves. At the same time many of these new classes asked students to engage with the world and their place in it; including confronting racial injustice, dealing with a global pandemic, and enduring a chaotic election. Supplies were distributed to homes, and instruction took place each day through computer screens.

This has been an incredibly difficult year for all our students, and the high quality of the work seen here is a testament to their resilience and resourcefulness. Almost all of the work in this exhibit was made remotely. Please enjoy this fabulous snapshot of a crazy year — and appreciate all the love, labor, and creativity that went into each of these works.
