A Centennial Exhibit in Downtown Amherst

PR Centennial Exhibit slide

Laying the Foundation: Amherst and the Jones Library, 1919-1929

Throughout downtown Amherst you will find nine panels in various storefront windows. These panels tell the story of the first ten years of the library, from its incorporation in 1919 through its establishment in the building it occupies to this day.

When the first Trustees began laying the foundation for the new library, in both a literal and philosophical sense, they were keenly aware that the library was for the people of Amherst, and worked to determine the community’s needs and how the library would meet them. This exhibit tells their story.
