Biographical Note

Beginning in 1987, Kanegasaki, Japan and Amherst, Massachusetts began an educational exchange program. With visits annually from students of Kanegasaki, where Amherst families host the students, students attend classes at an Amherst public school, and get the chance to experience a town of a similar size to their own, seeing our historical sights. The relationship was expanded with a sister city agreement in 1993, the agreement was then renewed in 2013. The sister city affiliation brings not only student exchange but also exchange of officials from both communities.

This collection houses administrative documents such as the sister city agreements, records of the Kanegasaki Sister City Committee, photos and documents throughout the years of educational exchange, student work of both sister cities, as well as gifts from Kanegasaki.
