Jones Library Collection, 1892-2016

Abstract

Established in 1919, The Jones Library is the public library for the Town of Amherst, Massachusetts. The Jones Library Collection covers a wide range of topics including the history of the Jones Library as well as its finances, programming, art collection, Directors, Friends group, and the building that houses it. This collection contains various materials relating to the Jones Library including photographs, correspondence, financial documents, newsclippings, scrapbooks, and ephemera, among other materials.

Historical Note

The Jones Library, along with its two branches, is the public library for the Town of Amherst, Massachusetts. The library was established in 1919 through the bequest of Samuel Minot Jones, a Chicago lumberman who grew up on Amity Street in Amherst. The library was housed first at the Amherst Town Hall, then the Amherst House, and finally at the Whipple House before the current building was completed in 1928. Governed by a Board of Trustees, the library provides a range of circulating materials, electronic resources, special collections, programming, and events for residents of Amherst and the surrounding area.

The library’s first director was Charles Green, who established the library as a space for community performances and gatherings and encouraged local authors, poets, academics, biographers, and other literary figures to come speak at the library. Green retired in 1954 after 34 years as director. Subsequent directors include William Merrill (1954-1970), Quentin de Streel (1970-1975), Anne Turner (1975-1980), Bonnie Isman (1980-2010), and Sharon Sharry (2011-present).

Scope and Content

The Jones Library Collection primarily contains the institutional archives for the Jones Library. It includes information about the library’s history, finances, programming and events, Board of Trustees, library directors and other staff, the building, Burnett Gallery, and Friends group. Materials range in date from 1892 to the present, although the bulk of the materials date to the mid-20^th century. Items in the collection include scrapbooks, correspondence, blueprints, financial records, flyers and posters, ephemera, blueprints, photographs, and meeting minutes, among other items.

Series Descriptions

Series 1: History 1892-1984

This series contains information about the early days of the public library in Amherst and the creation of the Jones Library following the donation of funds from Samuel Minot Jones. It is organized chronologically. It contains information about various organizational changes with the Jones Library including information about the charter amendment of 1934, and the memorandum of understanding of 1984. Scrapbooks about the library dating from 1920-1982 are also included in this series.

Series 2: Trustees, 1919-2009

This series contains information about the Trustees of the Jones Library including meeting minutes, correspondence, and files for individual Trustee members. This series is further divided into three subseries. Subseries A: General contains bylaws, correspondence, and other materials created by the Library Trustees. Subseries B: Individuals contains the files of individual Trustees including Horace Hewlett, Ernest Lindsey, John Tyler, and Ernest Whitcomb, among others. Subseries C: Meeting Minutes contains the Trustee meeting minutes from 1919 through 2009.

Series 6: Financial, 1920-2010

The financial series is divided into four subseries: Account Cards, Annual Reports, Financial Records, and Subject Files. Account cards include information about book purchasing. Jones Library annual reports are produced each year and contain library statistics and financial information. Financial records include annual reports on the finances of the Jones Library. Subject files contain information about various funds and donations to the Jones Library. Subseries A and D are arranged alphabetically by title. Subseries B and C are arranged chronologically.

Series 9: Special Collections, 1922-2013

This series contains information about Special Collections. It is divided into three subseries: Guest Books, General Special Collections, and Fine Arts Collection. Subseries A contains the guest books from various rooms at the Jones Library including the Boltwood, Emily Dickinson, and Frost rooms. Subseries B contains information on various collections and events held at the Jones Library. Subseries C includes information about the Jones Library Fine Arts Collection. All three subseries are arranged alphabetically by title.
