The Mabel Loomis Todd Version

After Dickinson's death, Mabel Loomis Todd assumed the responsiblity for organizing and publishing her poetry. She saw three volumes into print. Poem #585 appeared in the second series. Todd entitled it, The Railway Train.

Todd made other changes. She often substituted commas and semicolons for Dickinson's characteristic dashes. She regularized stanzas and grammar. Even so, compare her rendition of the poem's next to last line "Stop - docile and omnipotent -" with our "manuscript" version.
