Reserve Books Online

To get an item from another library or to place a hold on an Jones Library item that is currently checked out, you can reserve the item online, using your C/W Mars library card and your online account.

The first step is to find the desired item in the C/W MARS catalog.

  • Search for the item in the Jones Library catalog.
  • If the item is not owned by the Jones Library, widen your search to include "All Western MA Libraries" by selecting this option from the drop-down menu to the left of the SEARCH button in the light blue area above your initial search results, or by clicking here. Resubmit your search after selecting "All Western MA Libraries".
  • If the item is not owned by any of the C/W MARS libraries in Western Massachusetts, search the central region's libraries by clicking on "C/W MARS Union Catalog", found at the right side of the screen. The union catalog will appear in green, and will display items from both the central and western regions. You can also go directly to the central region catalog by clicking here.

Once you have found the desired item in the union catalog, click on "Request this item" found in blue under the title and author information. You will be asked to choose your region (of your home library). Next, enter your name and your library card number, and choose a pick-up location. Then click on "submit". (The next screen may ask you to choose which library you want the item sent from. If you see this, choose a library where the item appears to be available. Then click on "submit".) If all goes well, you will be told that your request was successful. You will then be notified when the item is ready to be picked up. If there is a problem placing your request, please call the reference desk for help at 259-3090. If there is a problem with your library account, you may have to come in to the library to resolve it before being able to place requests online.

If the item cannot be found in the C/W MARS catalog, you can then search the Massachusetts Virtual Catalog. Please note that the Virtual Catalog will not process your request if the item is found in the Western Region.

  • Select your region.
  • Enter your library card number and pickup location, and click on "Login".
  • Click on "searching/requesting".
  • Enter your search term, and click on "Begin Searching".
  • Find the desired item, and click on "Request". If the item is not available for loan, the next screen will say so.
  • Complete the "Create Request" button, and click on "Submit Request".
  • The system will assign your request a request number. Please make a note of it for future reference.

If you are unable to locate the item you want in either the C/W MARS catalog or the Massachusetts Virtual Catalog, you will need to come to the library and speak with a reference librarian to place a traditional interlibrary loan request. There is a $1 charge when you place the request, and you are asked to indicate on the form if you are willing to pay additional fees.

    Beware: Items not Picked Up

Once an item you've requested arrives at The Jones Library or its branches, the item must be picked up within 7 days. If the item is not picked up, you will be charged a 50 cent processing fee.

We are asking you to please cancel any hold as soon as you know you no longer need it -- perhaps you've gotten the item from a friend or purchased it--before it arrives at the Jones Library or its Branches. The library continues to look for materials, no matter how long it takes, unless you tell us you no longer need them. You can cancel the hold online by going to http://www.joneslibrary.org, clicking on catalog and logging into your record; or by calling the library during library hours at 413-259-3092. Please have your library card number available when you call us.

Please review your list of requested items regularly so that the library is only looking for materials that you intend to check out. We understand that popular items have long waiting lists and can take a while to arrive, so please cancel your hold if you give up on us and get the book elsewhere.

When your requested item arrives at the Library, the library staff makes every effort to contact you by telephone or email. Please make sure we have your most current contact information. The library cannot be responsible for messages that are not received.
