Librarian II - Head of Information Services


Job Summary

Performs highly professional public library work. Supervises full and part-time staff in a major service subdivision of the library. Develops web-based and print information resources with primary responsibility for the library's website. Participates in overall policy making for the library.

Supervision Received

Works under the broad guidance and direction of the Library Director. Performs duties independently using professional knowledge and judgment. When acting as Librarian-in-charge of the library, exercises discretion in making decisions and taking action in order to handle emergencies and implement policy.

Supervision Exercised

Responsible for daily supervision and management of all activities and staff in a public service or technical service subdivision of the library. Selects, trains, and supervises two part-time staff, interns, and volunteers. Assigns areas of responsibility and specific tasks, reviews, and evaluates completed work.

Major Duties

  1. Plans and coordinates the daily operations of the Information Services department.

  2. Selects, trains, and evaluates part-time professional and support employees. Conducts annual review evaluations. Ensures that employees perform their duties according to the library policy and procedure. Responsible for ongoing staff training.

  3. As Chair of the Website Committee, designs and maintains the library's website. Works collaboratively to create guidelines, determine structure and layout, and develop content. Collects accurate statistics on website usage, analyzes data and complies reports.

  4. Coordinates and supervises delivery of online databases for main library and branches. Works with Computer Technician to troubleshoot computer problems and to maintain operations of the library's computer systems and Internet access.

  5. Performs professional information service, answering questions in person, by telephone, mail and online. Locates specific information, identifies resources, and teaches patrons how to use materials. Conducts tours. Works weekends in rotation with other staff.

  6. Develops and conducts training on information resources and new technology for staff and patrons.

  7. Selects a wide variety of materials as part of the professional team. Withdraws obsolete and surplus titles in specific subject areas. Assures that collection purchases are within budget.

  8. Promotes library information services and special programs through innovative use of social media and traditional mass media. Actively communicates with library staff members, informing them of relevant information about the department.

  9. Collects accurate statistics on inquiries, use of reference databases, and public use of computers. Analyzes data and prepares a variety of reports. Recommends budget needs to the Director. Maintains supply and equipment inventory for the department. Makes arrangements for maintenance of the department's equipment.

  10. Stays current with library applications for emerging technology. Attends professional workshops and conferences.

  11. Participates in the development of library procedures and policies as a member of staff committees. Communicates official plans, policies and procedures to staff and to the general public.

  12. Maintains building security by enforcing library use rules and regulations and by clearing designated areas in fire and emergency evacuations. Acts as Librarian-in-charge in the absence of the Director and Assistant Director.

  13. Performs other duties as assigned, including cross training, in positions of equal pay level to support library operations.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Library Science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association, and three years experience in reference and website work, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Enthusiastic, creative and service oriented.
Extensive knowledge of information tools and an understanding of the changing service environment.
Experience in website management and demonstrated knowledge of Web authoring tools.
Possess excellent managerial and planning skills.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of part-time professional and support staff.
Ability to teach adults and to create online learning opportunities.
Ability to monitor and evaluate collection usage, generate, and analyze a variety of reports.
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, with persons of diverse ethnic backgrounds;
Ability to work well as a part of a team and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers, the general public, and partner agencies.

Library information databases and integrated library system (Innovative Interfaces); computer workstation and MS Office software suite; PC reservation software (Pharos); standard office equipment; digital scanner; microfilm/fiche reader printer.
