Cornelia Oberlander is Canada's premier Landscape Architect, holding several honorary memberships and degrees, and fellowships in both the Canadian and American Societies of Landscape Architecture.

As a child in Germany, Cornelia developed a love of plants and gardens from her mother who was a horticulturist. She earned her B.A at Smith College in an interdepartmental major in Landscape Architecture and Architecture. She continued her studies earning a BLA from Harvard University where she learned to collaborate with Architects and City Planners.

In 1953 Cornelia Oberlander moved to Canada with her husband Peter, discovering a beautiful country with untouched open spaces and limitless potential for landscape architecture. For the past 50 years, she has worked internationally with public agencies and acclaimed architects including Arthur Erickson and Moshe Safdie. Most recently she collaborated with with Renzo Piano on the New York Times Building in NYC.

All of her design work is based on a deep understanding of the social, cultural and physical features of the site. To each project she strives to bring a mastery of the art and science of landscape architecture, as well as the ability to work creatively as a member of the team with architects and engineers. Her landscape design work has been internationally recognized with awards and citations.

Her recent projects explore the ecological base of sustainable development. Land, water and air support creative and artful design limiting the human impact on the natural environment which is evident in the recommendations of the new Smith College Master Plan prepared with Roland Towers in 1996.
