The ESL Coordinator is available to help you with just about anything related to tutoring. What can she do for you? Here are some examples:
- Help you select or design teaching materials
- Brainstorm possible activities for a given instructional goal
- Look over lesson plans and offer suggestions
- Observe a session and offer suggestions
- Be the "contact" person for a "contact assignment" (assign your student to ask her a question, interview her, leave her a message, etc.)
- Provide referrals to social service agencies, attorneys, employers, classroom programs, etc.
- Get additional suggestions/feedback from your student on how it's going
- Trouble shoot problems of any kind
- Help you find more info on the culture/background of your student, or on a particular instructional need
- Show you and your student how to access the ESL computer
- Recommend computer programs and web sites for learning English (at the library or on a home computer)
- Put you in touch with other tutors who are working in similar situations
- Share information (and provide advocacy, if needed) on specific concerns, such as: getting a driver's license, becoming a citizen, enrolling in community college, taking the GED test, etc.
- Suggest field trip ideas
- Locate an alternate meeting room for you if all 3 tutoring rooms are full, or if you need to meet when the library is closed
- Track down a missing student
- Explain sticky grammatical questions
- Look for discarded/donated ESL textbooks that your student can take home and keep, or help you order new materials from a catalog
- Tell you about further training options (if you're thinking of becoming an ESL teacher)
- Get you a new placement (if your student is leaving, or if it's just not working out)
- Write a letter of recommendation/provide a verification or be a listed job reference for you
- Chat about what's been happening with you and your student (over tea/coffee/ lunch, if you like)
- Congratulate you/your student on achieving a milestone, or just listen when things aren't going so well…
Don't be afraid to ask- providing assistance and keeping in touch with tutors is the most important part of her job. She likes to hear from you!
