ESL Classes and Resources for International Visitors

Jones Library Conversation Groups:

Free conversation practice for intermediate speakers of English. No registration necessary. For more information, call: 413/ 259-3093.

Round the World Women:

Free activities (trips, parties, speakers, etc.) and conversation groups for international women. The program is run by local volunteers. For information, contact the UMass International Programs Office: 413/ 545-2843.

Amherst Partnership for Parents Learning English:

Free Monday evening classes taught by volunteers from 7 - 8:30 pm. Begins on January 9, 2012. Amherst Middle School cafeteria (170 Chestnut St.) Free childcare and homework help for kids! 413-522-6175 (Note: classes are primarily for parents of children in the Amherst Schools, but if there is space available, others are also welcome.)

American Language and Culture Program:

ESL/cultural orientation classes for foreign students/scholars and their families. (Small fee) For information, contact the UMass International Programs Office: 413/ 545-2710.

International Language Institute:

Tuition-based intensive daytime ESL classes, on the bus route in downtown Northampton: 17 New South St.

Jones Library:

Anyone who lives in Massachusetts can get a library card and borrow ESL books, tapes, and videos. Also, the library web site lists many free internet sites you can use to study English independently on your home computer:
