Amherst Reads - A Literary Festival

Amherst Reads Jon Scieszka

A Celebration of Literacy and Community

October 1 - October 29, 2005

"What if everyone read books by the same author?" We invite you to find out by participating in this area's second annual "One Book One Community" program called Amherst Reads. Amherst Reads is designed to be a catalyst to promote reading, develop a sense of community and provide a way for kids and adults alike to have fun reading!

Throughout the month of October, residents of Amherst and its surrounding communities are encouraged to put down the remote, turn off the video game and open a book. Similar to other One Book One Community programs run throughout the country, each October a specific book or author will be selected, and the community will be asked to read that book, participate in discussions and events, and generally use the books and their themes to strengthen its commitment to literacy and promote the joy of reading. This year, we are inviting all residents to read some of the many wonderful books written by author Jon Scieszka.

Read the Books

Throughout the month of October, libraries will be sponsoring workshops and curriculum strands have been created so that students may explore books by Jon Scieszka in their classrooms. The name of this exciting literacy campaign may be entitled AMHERST Reads, but it's designed so that all Massachusetts residents can take part and benefit.

Amherst Reads will culminate with a free festival to be held on October 29th from 12 - 4 pm at the Jones Library. See the schedule for the 2005 Amherst Reads Literary Festival here.
